We received total of $3,815.68 an 175.01% increased from January 2021 from 20 companies.  Out of $3,815.68 received, $3,380.90 is in CAD and $434.78 is in US dollar or 90 to 10 split.  For simplicity of this calculation, we are using 1:1 rate for the currency approach.

The dividend for TSE:LIF will be varied.  This month we received much less dividend from LIF than last quarter.   This investment is very risky; therefore it is only less than 2% of our portfolio.

Big increases from AQN and TD because we bought more shares and new dividend increased from TD recently.

New dividend payment for this month was: CNQ.  We bought this energy company recently in our dividend growth portfolio.

My top 3 dividends for January were AQN, TD and LIF.  They were combined for total of $1,827.56 or 48% of the dividend income this month.  Ideally, we wanted the top 3 companies of our monthly dividend no greater than 50% of the monthly dividend income because we wanted to  minimize the risk of dividend cut.

BarchartJan2022

By the end of December 2021, our Projected Annual Dividend Income (PADI) was $38,063. Our monthly dividend income was $3,170.  In January 2022, our PADI was $38,344 or $3,195 monthly.  Our goal for the year 2022 was able to reach $45,000 in the Project Annual Dividend Income

Options Income

Selling covered calls  is perhaps the best options strategy for extra income while waiting for the stock to grow.  While selling put option is strategy for extra income designed to buy stocks at a lower cost.

For our growth stocks in my portfolio, we decided to enhance my passive income with selling covered call/put options.  The following transaction were expired in the month of Jan 2022:

Date Transaction Expired Date Amount Exercised

The total income for selling Call/Put option for the month of January 2022 was $173.85 US dollar.   Our plan going forward is continue to sell Monthly covered call/ far out of the money Put for extra passive income.  Our strategy of selling options is using the short expiry time.  (i.e.  Monthly option)

Dividend Snowball Update

Dividend Snowball

Our Dividend Snowball Portfolio was able to accumulate more Dividends in January for growing to a bigger Dividend Snowball. The $3,989.53 total income that we received in January were used to reinvest in dividend growing companies to generate more dividends.

Our Dividend Snowball investing is relying on 3 things:

  • Dividend Growth
  • Reinvest Dividends
  • Additional Contribution

In January 2022, our dividends increased 175.01% YoY compared to January 2021.  We had 1 dividend increase in January. Therefore the growth of the our dividend income depended on Dividend Reinvestment and Additional Contribution to purchase of new stocks.

The total Dividend increases were $47.00.  At 4% dividend rate, these increases were equivalent to additional $1,100 invested in our portfolio in order to generate $44 of dividend income.  So far, ABR has increased the dividend since 1997. We were quite happy with the dividend increases.

Portfolio Update

By the end of December 2021, our portfolio was $723,852.  Our portfolio at the end of January 2022 was $695,259.  The total capital decrease for the month of January 2022 was $28,593 or -3.95%.

For ETF investing, we use Questrade because it is free of commission for buying ETF.  A head start on an investment account with an exclusive offer,  you could get up to $250 cash when you open and fund any self-directed account with Questrade.

In March 2021, we moved our taxable account from Questrade to Interactive Brokers because we liked the cheaper fee and lower rate of interest for the margin.   So far, we still like Interactive Brokers especially if you like to buy/sell option.

Summary

January was a good month dividend income.  We were able to generate total of $3,989.53 of passive income.  In addition, our projected annual dividend income has increased to $38,344 annually or $3,195 monthly.

This month, we sold less option because we didn’t see good opportunity to sell option call/put.  If we see the opportunity,  we would like to continue to sell more options to supplement our income in the future.

Our Dividend Snowball portfolio is progressing well for us.  We are happy with our buy/sell transactions in January.

How was your passive income in January?
